My name is Dr. Ann P. McMahon. I am an engineer, a systems thinker, a researcher, and an educator of K-12 students and their teachers. I am the award-winning author of the forthcoming book Full STEAM Ahead: How to Find Projects That Integrate Curriculum, Engage Students, and Change the World. I am also a speaker, consultant, and coach. I help students and teachers learn about science, engineering and themselves through experiences designed to engage them socially, emotionally and cognitively. I have many years experience with STEM/STEAM education and K-12 engineering education. With Custom K-12 Engineering, I use neuroscience to teach teachers about emotional and social learning through engineering. I can help you turn the new standards and latest research into transformative classroom practice for your school or your K-12 outreach program. I am an expert at bridging K-12 teaching practice and the practices of STEM professions by helping you translate the latest research in
- K-12 education
- psychodynamic developmental neuroscience
- engineering, and
- social and emotional learning
to create powerful classroom experiences for students and teachers. Let me focus and apply my multidisciplinary expertise in all these fields to meet your specific STEM education needs. Whether you serve students through work in schools, museums, businesses, or universities, my track record of success and broad spectrum of options tailored to your specific context will help you inspire and prepare the next generation of STEM/STEAM professionals.
I served as a K-12 science curriculum coordinator in a public school district for many years. I know the budget challenges schools face when curriculum is revised to accommodate new standards, and new instructional materials are purchased. I save schools money by teaching teachers to create engineering units that meet the Next Generation Science Standards. I teach them to integrate learning objectives and instructional materials from multiple subjects already in use. My services empower teachers to
- integrate multiple subjects into compelling engineering units
- discover and develop each student's creative and interpersonal strengths
- connect curriculum to real-world challenges and career choices.
Once teachers know my approach, they can apply it again and again, even as learning objectives are revised and instructional materials change. Moreover, my approach helps teachers improve their
classroom climate. Research shows that classroom climate is a key factor in improving student performance. Check out my services for educators and
STEM professionals.
